About Us

SUZANNA’S is a new fine-dine restaurant and pub in Blackrod, re-opened recently in the building which was well-known as Gallagher’s for many years, on the country lane known as Little Scotland, which links Blackrod with Haigh, just across the Wigan border.

Owner Suzanna Young feels the restaurant has re-invented her. She has always been passionate about food and has been involved in management in the hospitality business for over 20 years. She was married to a chef, and now her four children are growing up, she needed something new to focus on, and has now achieved her lifelong dream of owning her own restaurant.

The restaurant and pub have undergone a total transformation in the interior and indeed many exterior features,in a ten-month building project run by Suzi with local project engineer Steve Brewer of Peak Fabrications and many local contractors including heritage restoration experts Bolton Stone Restoration Ltd.

The premises are split into an 80-cover restaurant, and a separate pub area, where more relaxed (and lower cost!) meals are available. Classic pub favourites such as fish and chips and Lancashire hotpot are supplemented by delicious light bites including home-made soup and a range of sandwiches. Pub dining has already become extremely popular at lunchtime, although as Suzanna points out, pub food service is available until 9pm every night (7pm Fri-Sat), so as well as lunch, you are very welcome to come for your dinner, or your tea as we call it round here!

The pub opens earlier than most, serving a hearty British breakfast menu from 10am.

Despite being open only a few months, Suzanna’s is already attracting very positive reviews on restaurant review sites such as Trip Advisor and Urbanspoon.

Suzanna has hired Michelin star trained chef Mike Jennings to design the menus, source the food, and manage the new comprehensively fitted out kitchen. Mike worked under celebrity chef Gary Rhodes OBE, who then appointed him Head Chef at Rhodes South in Dorset.  Prior to that he worked as second chef for many years under Shaun Rankin at Michelin-starred Bohemia Restaurant in Jersey, and at the prestigious Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire, Scotland.  Mike has also worked at local Michelin star restaurant Northcote Manor in Blackburn.

Mike believes passionately in locally sourced fresh food. Everything at Suzanna’s is made from fresh ingredients, even down to the bread and ice-cream. In conjunction with Suzi and local food expert Patrick Trodden, he has designed a fine dining à la carte menu.

Fronting house is Maitre’d and experienced sommelier Phil Harris, who came to us from Sam’s Chop House in Manchester, and previously managed such establishments as The White House in Prestbury, and the Stanneylands Hotel restaurant in Wilmslow. Phil is returning to Blackrod after many years, in his youth he spent a year at the Georgian House on the A6.
